The right tags can sometimes be tough for a normal user to find. Most users will select general keywords, which may be relevant, but may be too general to yield a high search engine ranking. Keywords such as “sports, basketball, game, players” for a sports centered website are relevant, but are not specific enough to warrant a high ranking when being searched for.
Finding the Right Keywords for your Tags
A few easy ways of discovering the best keywords are as follows: First, use the specially designed, free Google Keyword Planner (formerly the Google Keyword Tool.) . This tool specifically helps you discover the best tags to use. Simply insert a word or phrase, and a list of relevant keywords will be displayed that you can select from, based on location. You can see how the keyword (i.e. SEO) is given, together with the location information (i.e. US) to complete the search. A list of the most searched for keywords is given. Take full advantage of this important information, and include some of these relevant keywords in future posts.
Google Trends is another great resource at your disposal. It actually measures the popularity of a number of keywords in order to compare their level of performance. Another great feature with Google Trends is that it will indicate the most popular tags for a given subject within a given area and time frame, so you are able to narrow the keywords that are most relevant to your specific audience.
There is one technique however, that has an edge on all the rest. When it comes to choosing keywords, this method has proved to be the best; and can increase the traffic to your website, by leaps and bounds. Bloggers will rarely give out this great tip, but there truly is nothing easier or more effective.
It is so simple that it is literally in front of your face all the time. Go to Google.com, and let it do it’s work. If you have created a website about SEO, begin by typing SEO into the search bar. You will see that Google completes the sentence for you and gives you a number of popular options. These Google-generated options are the perfect indicator of the keywords people are searching for.
If your website is about SEO, for example, use SEO to begin your Google search, and you will be given a number of keyword suggestions. Use variations in your search words to generate more ideas, as shown in the image:
You will get an idea of the most searched for tags on the topic of SEO, and it indicates that people are not just looking for “SEO” when they are looking for SEO information. More often than usual, variations of the term words are being used, as well as whole sentences, as demonstrated in the image.
